Attend Monthly Spring Workshops
Accepted students will be required to attend three monthly workshops leading up to the 5-week on campus experience. Dates for the workshops will be announced upon acceptance to the program and will occur in March, April, and May. These workshops focus on academic and career readiness using an environmental and social justice lends. These workshops are designed to prepare students for the 5-week on campus experience and help students prepare for transferring to a four-year university.
Complete a 5-Week On Campus Experience
Beginning in June, students will attend an on-campus experience on the University of Arizona campus in Tucson, AZ. Click on the items below to learn more about what you will experience as an ASJ student.
All students will be required to live in Tucson, AZ for the duration of the on-campus experience. Dorm rooms are provided at no cost to the student.
For students who are local to Tucson, or have familial obligations, please reach out to program staff for additional details and options.
The first three days of the program will be focused on introducing students to campus, campus systems, and campus resources. During this time students will tour and learn how to navigate campus, learn how to ride the Sunlink streetcar and Cat Tran shuttles, meet resources across campus, and prepare for their internship experience.
During the on-campus experience, all students will be paired with a University of Arizona faculty or staff mentor based on their academic and career interests. Students will complete a 20-30 hour per week internship for four weeks. At the end of the internships, students will present their experience at the A Student’s Journey Final Showcase.
During the on-campus experience, students will attend an all-day seminar each Friday. Students will receive 3 units of credit in this seminar at no cost to the student. This seminar introduces students to environmental and social justice and aims to help students apply that lens to their academic and career interests. Students will also prepare for their poster presentations at the final showcase during each Friday seminar.
Each Tuesday, students will participate in a social night. In the past, these nights have included activities such as going to dinner in downtown Tucson, going bowling, going to the movies, or playing Top Golf. These social nights are designed to provide opportunities for students to build relationships and community with one another.
Transportation is always provided to these events and students are able to participate at no cost.
Each Thursday during the on-campus experience, students will be able to participate in a talking circle. During the talking-circles a guest speaker will be invited to share their story with the cohort followed by a time for students to ask questions or share their experiences with others in a safe place.
Each Saturday during the on-campus experience, students will participate in a field trip to various areas around the Tucson area. In the past these field trips have included trips such as going to Mt. Lemon, visiting the San Xavier Co-op, and harvesting fruit in Saguaro National Park.
At the end of the on-campus experience, students will be able to present their experience in a poster session format at the A Student’s Journey Showcase. Students’ families, The University of Arizona community including faculty and staff, and all community partners are invited to attend the showcase.
